Horror on Ugwu Onyeama Highway as Petrol Tanker Explodes, Killing Scores

A devastating petrol tanker explosion on Saturday at Ugwu Onyeama Federal Highway, Enugu State, has left many dead and several others injured. The inferno, which erupted after a tanker carrying premium motor spirit (PMS) overturned and spilled its contents, also destroyed multiple vehicles.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as harrowing, with flames consuming everything in their path. A tanker driver at the site confirmed the loss of many lives, stating that some victims were burned beyond recognition. Emergency responders and locals rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, while bodies were transported to the morgue.

“As I speak, over 10 people, including children, have been burnt beyond recognition. Some of the victims have just been taken to the morgue in a pick-up van,” the witness recounted.

The explosion has rendered the Ugwu Onyeama route impassable, causing severe traffic disruptions. Reports indicate that the fire extended along the road leading to Agu-abor, worsening the situation.

Authorities are yet to provide an official casualty figure, but rescue operations are ongoing.
