High-Speed Crash in Umuahia Kills Father, Daughter
A tragic accident claimed the lives of a father and his teenage daughter on Wednesday in Umuahia, Abia State, when their SUV crashed into a stationary truck along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. The incident occurred at Amibo Ubakala, involving a light green Toyota Highlander and a Mack truck loaded with iron scrap.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Toyota Highlander, which was travelling at high speed from the Enugu direction, rammed into the parked truck. The impact killed the driver and his daughter instantly, while other family members in the vehicle sustained serious injuries.
Emergency response teams from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) arrived promptly at the scene, recovering the victims and taking the injured to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia. The deceased were taken to a nearby mortuary.
The driver of the truck, identified as Gideon Effiong Udofia, has been detained by the police as investigations begin into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, FRSC Sector Commander in Abia, Mrs Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed the incident and stated that initial findings suggest speeding or driver fatigue may have caused the fatal crash.
