Hardship: Customs Plans Nationwide Distribution of Seized Food Items
In response to the prevailing hardship in the country and escalating protests against soaring food prices, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled a strategic plan to distribute seized food items nationwide.
Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, announced the initiative, emphasizing that the distribution would occur only after rigorous checks certify the seized food items as fit for human consumption.
The move comes amid widespread demonstrations by young Nigerians protesting the current economic challenges and the exorbitant costs of essential food items.
The NCS National Public Relations Officer, CSC Abdullahi Maiwada, issued a statement on Tuesday, highlighting the commitment of the Comptroller General to advance President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security agenda. The statement emphasized that this initiative aligns with the core mandate of the service to serve the best interests of the Nigerian people and contribute to economic stability and prosperity.
Maiwada stated, “To alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians and improve access to essential food items, the Nigeria Customs Service will facilitate the direct disposal of food items forfeited to the Federal Government. These items will undergo certification by relevant agencies and will be distributed equitably nationwide through NCS Areas of Operations.”
He assured that the disposal modalities would be communicated through NCS formations nationwide, with a firm commitment to transparency, fairness, and public safety. The statement concluded with a pledge to manage the distribution diligently to ensure the benefits reach those most in need.
“The NCS remains resolute in its dedication to safeguarding the nation’s food security and advancing the economic well-being of all Nigerians. With the unwavering support and cooperation of the public, we will surmount these challenges and pave the way for a more prosperous future for our beloved nation,” Maiwada added.
