Hardship Affecting Church Attendance, Offerings in Churches, Says Anglican Bishop

The Archbishop of Ibadan Province, Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Dr. Williams Aladekugbe, has expressed concern over the economic difficulties in Nigeria, which he says are preventing many Christians from attending church services and making financial contributions.

Speaking at the 1st Distinguished Alumni Lecture of the Department of Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, Aladekugbe noted that the removal of fuel subsidies had worsened economic conditions, leaving many families struggling to meet basic needs. He observed that even those who manage to attend church often cannot afford offerings or other contributions.

Aladekugbe cited a recent call by a cleric urging President Bola Tinubu to address the worsening economic crisis during the burial of the late Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu. He highlighted how Nigerians across different faiths are feeling the pressure, with protests and demonstrations reflecting widespread frustration.

The bishop pointed out that the high cost of living has not only increased poverty and unemployment but also led to a surge in crime. Various groups, including traditional rulers, associations, and religious leaders, have voiced their concerns, calling on the government to ease the burden on citizens.

He emphasized that the situation has led many Nigerians to question their faith, with discussions about the country’s future dominating social media and public spaces. He urged religious leaders to play a greater role in providing hope and support, warning that depression and hopelessness could lead some to take extreme measures.

Aladekugbe stressed the importance of faith in overcoming fear and uncertainty. He warned that fear—whether of poverty, the future, or the unknown—only deepens the crisis. Instead, he called for a renewed commitment to faith as a means of finding strength and solutions.

He concluded by encouraging Nigerians to hold on to their faith despite the current hardships, believing that divine intervention would provide relief in due time.
