Gunmen Kill Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Consultant in Enugu

 

A consultant neuro-psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Enugu, Dr. Andrew Orovwigho, has died after being kidnapped and shot by unidentified assailants, raising fresh concerns about the safety of healthcare workers in Nigeria.

 

Information obtained on Friday indicates that Dr. Orovwigho was abducted on December 30, 2025, in front of his residence in Enugu. During the abduction, he was reportedly shot. He was released by his captors on January 1, 2026.

 

Shortly after his release, he was allegedly attacked again. Sources said he was shot a second time and left by the roadside.

 

According to one source, a passerby found him and rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, Dr. Orovwigho died from his injuries on January 2, 2026.

 

Dr. Orovwigho was a consultant neuro-psychiatrist at FNPH, Enugu, where he was known for his work in mental health care and the treatment of vulnerable patients.

 

The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State chapter, Dr. Sunny Ken Okafor, confirmed the incident by telephone. He said details were still being gathered and announced that an emergency meeting of doctors in the state has been scheduled for next Wednesday to discuss the killing.

 

Medical professionals in the state have expressed concern over rising incidents of kidnapping and violence targeting health workers, warning that the trend poses serious risks to healthcare delivery.

 

  • The management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu, has not issued an official statement as of the time of filing this report. Tributes have continued to come in from colleagues and patients mourning the loss of the psychiatrist.
