Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint, Burn Vehicles in Anambra
Unidentified gunmen launched an attack on a police checkpoint at Ajali, located in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The attack, which took place on Thursday, involved a gun battle between the assailants and security forces. Two security operatives, including a police officer and a member of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG), were injured in the exchange of fire and are currently receiving medical treatment. Unfortunately, the gunmen set fire to two operational vehicles belonging to the AVG, which were completely destroyed in the blaze.
The gunmen were reportedly intercepted on the Umuchu-Amesi-Uga Road, and a blue Hilux vehicle, believed to have been stolen from a civilian, was recovered from them. Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that joint operations are ongoing in the area to apprehend those responsible. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
Anambra State, along with other southeastern states such as Abia, Imo, Enugu, and Ebonyi, has been grappling with increasing attacks from gunmen believed to be affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
