Gunman Kills Four, Including Police Officer, in Midtown Manhattan Skyscraper Shooting

A gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower on Monday evening, killing four people—including a police officer—before taking his own life, authorities confirmed.

The shooting occurred around 6:00 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise home to major firms such as Blackstone, KPMG, and the NFL. Chaos erupted during rush hour as police responded to reports of an active shooter, prompting a swift lockdown of the area.

Mayor Eric Adams, speaking at a hospital near the scene, confirmed that a fifth victim remains in critical condition.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the gunman, identified as Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, exited a black BMW armed with an M-4 rifle and immediately opened fire upon entering the building—first targeting a police officer in the lobby before spraying the area with bullets.

Tamura then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he continued his deadly rampage before apparently shooting himself. Officers later found his body next to the weapon.

In addition to the M-4, investigators recovered a revolver, multiple magazines, and medication bearing Tamura’s name from his car. Tisch noted that the shooter had a documented history of mental illness but held a valid Nevada firearms permit. He reportedly drove cross-country to New York, arriving just hours before the attack.

Among the dead was a 36-year-old NYPD officer originally from Bangladesh. Two other male victims and one female victim also lost their lives. Authorities have not released a possible motive for the shooting.

The FBI is assisting local law enforcement in the investigation, though officials believe Tamura acted alone.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and terror. Shad Sakib, an office worker nearby, told AFP that he was preparing to leave work when a shelter-in-place alert was issued.

“Everyone was confused… Then someone realized it was online—someone had walked in with a machine gun,” Sakib said. “You would think it won’t happen to you, and then it does.”

The shooting comes amid continued concern over gun violence in the U.S. According to the Gun Violence Archive, Monday’s incident marks the 254th mass shooting in the country this year—defined as incidents where four or more people are shot.

Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed she has been briefed, and Zohran Mamdani, the frontrunner in New York’s upcoming mayoral race, posted on X: “Heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in Midtown. I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in my thoughts.”
