Gunfire Erupts in Anambra: Suspected IPOB Member Killed in Clash with Vigilantes

Tension gripped the Ezinifite community in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday morning after a suspected member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), was shot dead during a confrontation with local vigilantes.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. when over 15 armed men allegedly invaded the community from neighbouring Imo State through the Amalum village boundary. Members of the Agunechamba Vigilante Group said they intercepted the gunmen, who were believed to be planning an attack.

A fierce exchange of gunfire followed, leaving one of the suspected attackers dead while several others reportedly fled into the surrounding bushes with gunshot wounds. A pump-action rifle was recovered from the deceased, whose body has been deposited at the Ezinifite mortuary.

Security sources confirmed to security analyst Zagazola Makama that police tactical teams were dispatched to the area but arrived after the attackers had escaped. The scene has since been cordoned off, with joint operations by police and local vigilantes underway to track down the fleeing suspects.

Authorities have commended the vigilante group for their swift action in preventing a possible attack and urged residents to remain calm. They assured that security agencies are maintaining surveillance to ensure the continued safety of the community.
