Gunfire Erupts at IYC Elections in Port Harcourt: Three Dead, Several Injured
Tragedy struck during the elections organized by the Jonathan Lokpobiri-led Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) for the Eastern Zone, as gunfire erupted, leaving at least three individuals dead and several others injured.
Reports indicate that the violence began when gunshots shattered the peaceful proceedings, prompting residents to flee in search of safety. Eyewitnesses have confirmed that the casualties include three fatalities, though the exact number of injured remains unclear.
The Nation reported that the chaotic scene saw residents scatter in panic as the gunfire continued. Rivers State Police Command Spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko condemned the violence, calling it “senseless,” though no official confirmation on casualties was provided at the time.
In response to the violence, Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has deployed Tactical Teams to the area. Unfortunately, the assailants had already dispersed by the time the police arrived. Commissioner Disu has vowed to track down those responsible and ensure they face justice.
