Group Criticizes Soludo Over Second LG Caretaker Appointments
The Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONet) has publicly criticized the ongoing management of local government areas in Anambra State through caretaker committees.
ACSONet’s chairman, Prince Chris Azor, voiced his disappointment with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s decision to submit another list of appointees to the House of Assembly for screening and confirmation to oversee the state’s 21 local government areas for an additional three-month term.
Azor, speaking to journalists in Awka shortly after the transition committee members’ screening, described the caretaker arrangement as anti-democratic, claiming it hinders local government development.
“We feel worried and apprehensive about the present developments. This doesn’t bode well for democracy and sustainable development,” Azor remarked.
Despite Governor Soludo signing the Anambra State Electoral Law, 2024, on June 11, 2024, with a promise to initiate local government elections, Azor suggested that the governor’s latest nominations might be a strategy to prevent a governance vacuum. He urged the governor to expedite the local government elections before the current caretaker committee’s term ends to avoid further temporary appointments.
