Governors remain APC leaders in their states, Tinubu says at Kefas reception

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that governors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) are the recognised leaders of the party in their respective states.

He made the statement on Saturday in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, during the formal reception of Governor Agbu Kefas into the APC. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the president said Mr Kefas, by defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has assumed leadership of the APC in Taraba.

Mr Tinubu pledged federal support for the governor and his cabinet to advance development in the state. He noted the governor’s efforts to promote unity across Taraba’s diverse communities and urged residents to support his administration.

The president also described the defection as significant for the North-East and called on Adamawa and Bauchi states to align with the APC.

APC National Chairman Nentawe Yelwatda commended Mr Kefas for leaving the PDP, describing the move as bold. He said joining the APC would create opportunities to strengthen Taraba’s economy and improve prospects for young people and women. He assured party members, both long-standing and new, of equal participation in party affairs.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, said the governor’s move would position Taraba for greater access to national opportunities, including infrastructure development and improved security.

In his remarks, Mr Kefas said his decision was driven by the interests of Taraba residents. He said the goal was to expand employment, support businesses, and deliver results through disciplined governance.

Mr Kefas was elected governor under the PDP in 2023. He defected to the APC in 2025 and has since completed his membership registration.
