Government Considers Chemical Castration to Curb Sex Crimes
The UK Government is reportedly preparing to introduce chemical castration for paedophiles and rapists as part of a wider crackdown on sex crimes. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is said to be spearheading plans to roll out drug-based treatments in 20 prisons across England and Wales, with a view to expanding the programme nationwide.
The use of medication to suppress sexual urges and reduce reoffending rates by up to two-thirds has been studied in the UK and abroad. Government sources told *The Sun* that Mahmood is determined to pursue bold measures to protect the public, rejecting a small voluntary pilot as too lenient.
Chemical castration—already used in countries such as Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, and in some U.S. states like California—typically involves two drugs: one to suppress sexual thoughts and another to lower testosterone levels, significantly reducing libido. In several jurisdictions, the process is voluntary, and some offenders reportedly seek it out.
Support for such a policy appears strong among younger voters. A Find Out Now poll from February found that 67% of voters under 30 backed the idea of chemically castrating sex offenders, while only 24% opposed it, indicating a firm stance on law and order among the younger generation.
The Government is expected to unveil more detailed plans in the coming months as it considers expanding the policy from prisons to the broader criminal justice system.
