Government Begins Distribution of N50 Billion Grants to Small Businesses

The Federal Government has started giving out N50 billion grants to nano business owners across Nigeria. Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Minister for Industry, Trade, and Investment, confirmed that over 200,000 small business owners have already received their grants, and another 800,000 are expected to get theirs before May 31, 2024.

The goal is to support one million businesses spread across all 774 local government areas. These grants are part of the government’s efforts to help businesses cope after removing the petrol subsidy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced these measures last year, recognizing the importance of small businesses in driving economic growth.

The selection process for beneficiaries involved randomly choosing applicants who met specific conditions out of 3.6 million applicants. Dr. Uzoka-Anite explained the thorough verification process, including using National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) to ensure fairness and prevent fraud.

Although some beneficiaries have experienced delays, the Minister assured that the process is ongoing and transparent. The grants are being distributed in batches, with verification done at the state and local government levels to avoid mistakes.

Regarding extending the program or publishing the list of beneficiaries, Dr. Uzoka-Anite stated that there are no plans for another grant at the moment. However, the list of beneficiaries will be made public, allowing individuals to check their status using their BVN and last name.

In addition to the grants, the Federal Government has implemented other measures to help citizens, such as distributing grains through state governments, providing cash to vulnerable Nigerians, and giving wage awards to federal workers. Plans to introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses are also in progress, showing the government’s commitment to addressing economic challenges.
