Gov Bala Mohammed Speaks After Closed-Door Meeting with Peter Obi
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has declared his readiness to work with Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, in a bid to deliver good governance to Nigerians.
The governor made this known on Thursday during Obi’s consultation visit to the Presidential Lodge in Bauchi. He said their discussion focused on how they could collaborate to tackle poverty and insecurity across the country, emphasizing that their engagement went beyond politics, religion, or ethnicity.
“We discussed state-by-state challenges, and I feel highly appreciative of what he is doing as the leader of the opposition, because whether we like it or not, he is the leader of the opposition now in Nigeria,” Mohammed said.
He further stated, “I want to say at this level, not to make some of those doubting Thomases and mischievous minds pre-empt what we are doing, that I’m ready to work with Peter Obi. We will make sure we come together, close ranks, bring good governance to the country, and give vibrant opposition with knowledge, timelines, and vision in such a manner that we will rescue and recover our country.”
According to Mohammed, their alliance sends a strong message that will resonate across the political landscape, noting that other PDP governors support the move, as it aims to unify leaders beyond party and regional lines.
In his remarks, Obi said his visit was to consult with Governor Mohammed, who serves as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and remains a key figure in Nigeria’s political space.
“It’s just a consultation and discussion meeting that will continue as we talk about the future of this country,” Obi said. “We have to discuss issues happening in the North. I told the governor today that the North is a critical component if we are going to get it right in this country.”
He stressed the need for urgent investment in critical areas to lift people out of poverty, which he identified as a root cause of criminality.
The two leaders held a closed-door meeting for over three hours before briefing journalists.
