Gov Adeleke Implements Suspension of Foreign Travel for Government Officials
In a move aimed at curbing excessive government spending and ensuring financial prudence, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has suspended foreign trips for government officials within his administration for the remainder of the year, with exceptions only for emergencies.
This directive came during a crucial meeting with members of the State Executive Council, where discussions revolved around the 2024 budget proposals submitted by various ministries, departments, and agencies. This deliberation served as a precursor to the submission of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework to the State House of Assembly in Osogbo.
Governor Adeleke emphasized the need for all members of his administration to demonstrate readiness to make sacrifices, given the challenging financial situation currently faced by the state. He urged cabinet members to be willing to make personal sacrifices and avoid excessive spending on recurrent and overhead expenses.
“We must sustain the momentum of our service delivery by avoiding excessive spending on recurrent and overheads,” the Governor asserted. “Our needs, from office facilities to accommodation, are substantial, but our resources are limited. As a result, we must develop coping mechanisms until our funding situation improves.”
Additionally, Governor Adeleke outlined an administrative change in the process. Special Advisers will now be required to route their memos through the Permanent Secretary to the Commissioners. Furthermore, he urged the Commissioners to ensure fairness and maintain an accommodating spirit within the administration.
In an effort to enhance governance efficiency, the Head of Service, Leye Aina, has been tasked with preparing a memo that will define the relationship between Commissioners and Special Advisers. This step aims to streamline the decision-making process and promote a more effective and economical use of resources in the state.
As Osun State grapples with financial constraints, Governor Adeleke’s decision to suspend foreign trips for government officials underscores the commitment to fiscal responsibility and prudent financial management, as well as the dedication to delivering essential services to the people of the state.
