Generator Fumes Kill Seven in Yenagoa Studio

Seven individuals lost their lives after inhaling fumes from a generator inside a music studio on Transformer Road in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The victims, reportedly including university students from Delta State, were working late into the night in the studio owned by one Akpos Barakubo. Due to an unreliable power supply, they used a generator for electricity and, unfortunately, succumbed to the fumes while asleep.

Local residents discovered the bodies on Tuesday morning. Six were found deceased at the scene, and one person, initially unconscious, later died at the hospital. The studio had become a tragic death trap due to the pervasive use of generators in the area.

Security forces have cordoned off the site, and the bodies have been transported to a mortuary. Mr. Damion Asamonye, a local resident, expressed anger and frustration over the incident, attributing the tragedy to the failure of both state and federal governments to provide reliable electricity.

“Both federal and state government have failed us,” he said. “If there was public power supply, maybe these people wouldn’t have lost their lives in this circumstance. The most annoying thing is that soon, the PHED (Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company) personnel will come to disconnect power that they are not supplying.”

Another resident, Mrs. Joy Reuben, echoed these sentiments, urging the government to improve power infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.

When contacted, Bayelsa State Police spokesman, ASP Musa Muhammed, was unable to provide immediate details, stating he would follow up but had not responded by the time of this report.
