General Gowon: President Tinubu Making Strides in Addressing Hardship, Calls for Public Understanding
Former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, appealed for patience from Nigerians regarding President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address the nation’s challenges. After a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Gowon emphasized the complexity of addressing Nigeria’s issues, urging citizens to allow time for tangible results.
Gowon, during his first visit to President Tinubu since the inauguration, discussed not only domestic economic challenges but also the crisis within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He expressed optimism that, given time, the government’s efforts would yield positive results.
Following the meeting, General Gowon called on ECOWAS leaders to withdraw sanctions on Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. In a letter delivered to the ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, Gowon urged dialogue to resolve differences and preserve the unity and stability of the region. The letter emphasized the potential consequences of the three countries’ exit from ECOWAS, stressing the importance of maintaining the community for the benefit of the citizens.
Gowon’s plea extended to lifting sanctions on the mentioned countries and encouraging them to reconsider their intention to leave ECOWAS. The letter proposed a summit involving all 15 ECOWAS Heads of State to discuss the future of the community, regional security, and the role of the international community.
As one of the founding fathers of ECOWAS, Gowon emphasized the historical significance and achievements of the regional bloc, urging leaders to prioritize the well-being of the people and work towards restoring unity within the community. The former Head of State expressed his readiness for further engagements to ensure the continued unity of ECOWAS, calling on other elders in the sub-region to join the campaign for solidarity.
