A gas explosion at a plumbing market in Onitsha, Anambra State, claimed one life and left six others injured on Thursday, May 16, 2025. The incident occurred inside a welder’s shop along Uga Street, reportedly triggered by excessive heat from a welding gas cylinder.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victims were inside the shop when the cylinder exploded during a welding operation. Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, describing it as regrettable. He stated that the deceased victim has been deposited at a morgue, while the injured are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
Ikenga also noted that officers from the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Headquarters worked alongside local residents to rescue the victims. He emphasized that the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has responded with a directive on safety measures to prevent similar incidents. These include routine inspection and maintenance of gas equipment, secure storage of gas cylinders, and adherence to manufacturer safety instructions.
Security operatives have since cordoned off the affected area to maintain order and prevent opportunistic crimes.
