Gabon’s Deposed Leader Ali Bongo’s Wife Sylvia Ondimba Jailed on Allegations of Embezzlement
Development following the coup that shook Gabon in late August, Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, the wife of Gabon’s former President Ali Bongo Ondimba, has been officially jailed. This action follows her previous house arrest, which was imposed immediately after the coup that ended the Bongo dynasty’s 55-year rule in the central African country.
Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, who has been under house arrest in the capital city, Libreville, since the coup on August 30, has faced allegations of embezzling public funds. These allegations resulted in charges of money laundering, forgery, and falsification of records, officially filed against her on September 28.
The coup leaders, who orchestrated the swift overthrow of Ali Bongo’s regime just moments after he was declared the winner in a presidential election, claim that the former head of state and his associates manipulated election results. Furthermore, they accuse Sylvia Bongo and her son, Nourredin Bongo Valentin, of effectively running the oil-rich nation for the past five years and misusing public funds.
Nourredin Bongo Valentin, Sylvia’s son, has also faced the consequences of the political upheaval, being detained and charged with corruption since the coup. The actions against both Sylvia and Nourredin have drawn condemnation from their lawyer, Francois Zimeray, who labeled the procedures as “arbitrary and illegal.”
Zimeray stated, “We condemned this illegal procedure. There is a difference between justice and arbitrary actions, between the law and revenge.” The public prosecutor in Libreville has not provided an official response to AFP’s request for comment regarding these developments.
It is worth noting that Ali Bongo, who ruled Gabon since 2009 following his father’s death, was overthrown by military leaders who contested the legitimacy of his election. To many observers, the event was perceived more as an act of liberation rather than a traditional military coup.
Gabon, known for its vast oil resources, ranks as Africa’s third-richest nation in terms of per-capita GDP. However, despite this economic wealth, the country faces significant challenges with one in three of its citizens living below the poverty line, according to data from the World Bank. The ongoing legal proceedings against Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin and her son Nourredin could have far-reaching implications for Gabon’s political landscape and the Bongo family’s legacy in the country.
