Burkina Faso Signs Nuclear Power Plant Agreement with Russia

The military junta in Burkina Faso has formalized an agreement with Russia to construct a nuclear power plant, marking a significant step towards enhancing the nation’s electricity capacity. The accord stems from discussions held between Ibrahim Traore, the leader of the junta, and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Russia-Africa summit in July.

Traore, recognizing Burkina Faso’s pressing energy needs, sought Putin’s support for the establishment of a nuclear power facility in the country. He stressed the importance of this endeavor in meeting the nation’s escalating energy demands, stating, “We have a critical need for energy. This is an important point for me because we need, if possible, to build a nuclear power station in Burkina Faso to produce electricity.”

Burkina Faso’s strategic location in the heart of West Africa positions it as a pivotal player in addressing the sub-region’s energy deficit. The military junta assumed power on September 30, 2022, partly in response to mounting discontent over the government’s inability to contain a persistent jihadist insurgency that infiltrated the country from neighboring Mali in 2015. Consequently, the junta has turned to Russia for both economic and military assistance since the coup.

Burkina Faso faces the challenge of being one of the countries with the lowest access to electricity globally, with only 21 percent of its population currently connected to the grid. The newly established partnership aligns with the country’s objective to achieve 95 percent electricity access in urban areas and 50 percent in rural regions by the year 2030.

It is noteworthy that in 2017, Russia had also signed an agreement to construct two nuclear power plants in Nigeria. However, this project has yet to commence, and the reported worth of the deal stands at $20 billion.

Currently, South Africa remains the sole African nation that generates nuclear power on a commercial scale, making this venture a significant milestone in Burkina Faso’s pursuit of energy self-sufficiency and economic growth.
