Fubara and Wike Begin Peace Talks After Mediation by Osoba to Resolve Political Rift

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have initiated peace talks to resolve their longstanding political feud. The reconciliation effort follows mediation by former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba and current Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun, marking the first step in resolving the divisive political tensions that have plagued the state. Sources close to both figures confirmed that the two leaders recently met at Wike’s Abuja residence, where they engaged in lengthy discussions.

During the meeting, Fubara reportedly offered an apology for his past actions, with a source revealing that he “prostrated and begged the FCT Minister for forgiveness” in a symbolic gesture of reconciliation. The two leaders are expected to meet again soon to finalize the peace process. This dialogue comes after nearly two years of political turmoil in Rivers, which was exacerbated by the strained relationship between Wike and Fubara.

The political deadlock reached a tipping point in March 2025, leading President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State and appoint retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator. The National Assembly swiftly approved the declaration, despite public backlash. This move sparked a legal challenge from 11 PDP governors, who filed a lawsuit at the Supreme Court, contesting the legality of the state of emergency.

Amidst the peace talks, PDP’s Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, expressed concerns that Fubara should not compromise the interests of Rivers State for personal gain. He acknowledged the importance of the reconciliation efforts but warned against undermining the state’s integrity for political advantage. Osadolor also criticized the state of emergency declaration, questioning its justification and highlighting the relative peace in Rivers compared to other states with more pressing security concerns.

In contrast, the All Progressives Congress (APC) lauded the role of its leaders in mediating the dispute. Bala Ibrahim, the APC Director of Publicity, emphasized that the peace process was driven by a commitment to stability in Rivers State, rather than political gain. Ibrahim underscored the APC’s dedication to promoting peace and unity, regardless of the individuals involved.
