From Altar to Ancestral Ways: Catholic Priest Resigns, Becomes Native Doctor
Dr. Echezona Augustine Obiagbaosogu, a Catholic priest for 17 years, has left the priesthood to embrace a new role as a native doctor specializing in rainmaking. The unexpected move has sparked discussions across the Catholic community and beyond.
Dr. Obiagbaosogu, who is also a lecturer in African Traditional Religion at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has always been interested in the spiritual heritage of Africa. In recent months, he deepened his knowledge of traditional practices by training with an experienced native doctor, learning the art and science of rainmaking.
In explaining his decision, Dr. Obiagbaosogu said, “I have discovered my true calling lies in reconnecting with the ancient traditions of our ancestors. I am not abandoning God, but rather embracing the divine in a way that feels more authentic and meaningful to me.”
He described the links he sees between traditional African practices and modern science, saying, “Magic led to religion, and religion eventually paved the way for science. What was once called magic has now been codified as science. African magic, or what we call African science, is still largely untapped, and we must explore, document, and preserve it for future generations.”
The former priest also voiced concerns about the misrepresentation of African traditions in films. “What Nollywood shows as African magic distorts our culture and values,” he said. “True African magic is rooted in science and knowledge, not superstition.”
When asked about leaving the Church, Dr. Obiagbaosogu called it a deeply personal decision. “Life is a process of self-discovery,” he explained. “As we grow, we reflect on our path and make choices that align with our true selves.”
His bold step has ignited debates about the coexistence of traditional African spirituality and modern religion. For Dr. Obiagbaosogu, it represents a return to his roots and a new way to serve his community.
