Fresh Attacks Leave Over 20 Dead in Benue, Council Chairman Breaks Down

A wave of brutal attacks in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State has left more than 20 people dead, including a two-year-old child, sparking renewed outrage and despair from local authorities.

The chairman of the council, Ormin Torsar Victor, confirmed the killings in an emotional video, lamenting the continued violence in the region and accusing the federal government of inaction. The attacks reportedly took place in several villages, including Aondana and Tewa Biana—an area disturbingly close to a military base. Despite this proximity, the chairman claimed, security forces failed to respond as the killings unfolded.

“They say the local security doesn’t have the mandate to engage these people, that only the federal government can give that mandate. So should my people continue to die while we wait? What is the meaning of this?” Torsar said, his voice heavy with emotion.

The council chairman described the devastation left in the wake of the attacks, including the burial of a father and his two adult sons in Tewa Biana. With visible frustration, he questioned the relevance of his position if he lacked the power to protect his people.

“If they cannot help me, maybe I’ll leave this position as chairman and let it continue the way it is,” he said.

Torsar’s anguish was palpable as he recounted the killing of a toddler and the psychological toll the violence has taken on him and his community. “I don’t care about being chairman anymore. Look at a child of two years old butchered—it’s too much for me to condone,” he said.

At least 20 people were confirmed dead in Aondana village alone, a location of historical and political significance. “This is the village of the former First Lady of this state, Mrs. Eunice Ortom. This is the village of the Tugwe. This is the village of Bishop Banagbe. Whatever will happen, will happen. I don’t know what to do anymore,” the chairman added, his voice breaking with despair.
