Four Women Tragically Killed in Bauchi Stampede During Zakat Distribution
A solemn atmosphere enveloped Bauchi state as news emerged of a tragic stampede claiming the lives of four women during a zakat distribution event. The incident unfolded at approximately 10:20 a.m. on Sunday at the Shafa Holdings Company headquarters along Jos road in Bauchi.
Ahmed Wakil, the Bauchi police spokesperson, confirmed the devastating turn of events to TheCable, disclosing that amidst the chaos, a 17-year-old girl sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in the state.
“In the wake of the distress call received at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi by a benevolent individual, indicating the arrival of five unconscious women,” Wakil stated, “the commissioner of police Bauchi state command CP Auwal Musa Muhammad swiftly mobilized our forces to the scene.”
Upon arrival, law enforcement promptly evacuated the victims to the hospital, where medical professionals confirmed the tragic loss of four lives, with only one survivor, identified as Naimah, still under medical care.
Expressing concern over the handling of the zakat distribution, Wakil emphasized the need for adherence to standard operating procedures, urging organizers to liaise with law enforcement to ensure crowd control measures are in place.
“The commissioner of police has taken control of the situation, allowing normalcy to return to the area,” Wakil assured. “However, it is imperative for the public to notify the police prior to hosting events that gather large crowds to enable effective crowd management.”
Amidst condolences extended to the bereaved families, Wakil affirmed that investigations are underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the stampede, promising transparency in the quest for justice and accountability.
