Four Electrocuted During Lagos Chieftaincy Celebration After Canopy Hits Live Wire
Four people were electrocuted during a chieftaincy celebration in the Idimu area of Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State, after a canopy came into contact with a live electric wire. The victims included three party guests and a truck motor boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred on Anjorin Street, where the celebration was held to honor a community member recently given a chieftaincy title. Several canopies had been set up for guests, and witnesses said the tragedy unfolded when a truck navigating the street was blocked by one of the canopies. People, including one of the truck’s occupants, attempted to lift the canopy to clear the way, unaware that an exposed electric cable lay nearby. The metal frame of the structure touched the live wire, electrocuting those handling it instantly.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as guests fled in panic. The three injured party attendees were rushed to a hospital and are receiving treatment, while the motor boy was confirmed dead on arrival. Residents later reported that the family of the deceased took custody of his remains for burial.
Some locals expressed shock, recalling seeing the motor boy shortly before the incident. Efforts to get official comments from the Lagos State Police were unsuccessful, with the police spokesperson stating that no report had been received from the local station. Calls and messages seeking further clarification went unanswered at the time of reporting.
