Former Minister Chidoka Condemns Return of Emirates Airline to Nigeria
Osita Chidoka, the former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has voiced strong opposition to the reinstatement of Emirates Airline’s services in Nigeria. In a statement released via his X handle on Wednesday, May 22, Chidoka criticized both the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government and Emirates Airline, calling their actions a “direct affront on the pride and respect of Nigerians.”
Chidoka’s statement highlighted several grievances, noting that the announcement by the current Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, regarding Emirates’ return, was a painful reminder of Nigeria’s diminishing national pride and global relevance. He expressed outrage at Emirates Airline’s decision to resume operations in Nigeria, interpreting it as a sign of contempt and disdain for the nation.
During his tenure as Aviation Minister, Chidoka recalled, Emirates was granted favorable slots to operate in Lagos and Abuja, reflecting Nigeria’s intention to build strong regional alliances. However, he accused Emirates of abandoning Nigeria during economic challenges, contrasting this with the solidarity shown by other African and European airlines that continued their operations despite financial difficulties.
Chidoka also condemned the UAE government’s visa ban on Nigerians, describing it as a severe and unjustified act of aggression and dehumanization. He criticized the lack of an apology or explanation from the UAE regarding the ban and demanded a thorough investigation and restitution before allowing Emirates to resume flights in Nigeria.
Emphasizing the need for respect and accountability, Chidoka urged the Nigerian government to insist on redress and to uphold national sovereignty and pride against what he described as “arrogant corporations or foreign governments.”
In his concluding remarks, Chidoka asserted that Nigeria’s sovereignty and the dignity of its people are non-negotiable and should be defended vigorously.
