Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello Seeks Transfer of EFCC Case to Kogi State
In a recent development, Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, has formally requested that his ongoing legal battle with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) be moved to Kogi State. Bello’s defense hinges on the argument that the alleged financial misconduct and misuse of public funds, which are the subject of EFCC’s investigation, occurred during his tenure as governor of the state, thereby justifying that the legal proceedings should take place there.
The EFCC has been actively investigating Bello over allegations related to financial impropriety during his time in office. This move comes following previous legal maneuvers, including a recent decision by the Court of Appeal in Abuja to set aside contempt proceedings initiated by Bello against EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede. The court granted a stay of proceedings on the contempt application against Olukoyede, allowing the EFCC to proceed with its appeal and serve necessary documents to the former governor through substituted means.
Earlier, the Kogi State High Court had summoned Olukoyede to appear and explain his actions following an incident at Bello’s residence in Abuja. The EFCC chairman had appealed the ruling of the trial court, seeking a halt to further proceedings. The appellate court subsequently overturned the high court’s decision, citing procedural irregularities in its handling of the case.
