Former Governors, Ex-Lawmakers Attend ADC Stakeholders Meeting in Benin
Two former governors of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Professor Osarhiemen Osunbor, alongside prominent former lawmakers, gathered in Benin for a high-level stakeholders meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling growing momentum within the party ahead of the upcoming August 16 by-elections and the 2027 presidential race.
Hosted at the residence of Chief Odigie-Oyegun, the meeting also drew notable political figures including former Senate Chief Whip Sir Rowland Owie, former Senator Ehigie Uzamere, and former House of Representatives member Hon. Sergius Ogun. The political heavyweights expressed renewed confidence in ADC’s ability to reposition itself as a viable national force and secure significant electoral victories.
Sir Rowland Owie, speaking at the event, announced that members of the political group, the League of Democrats, had unanimously resolved to join the ADC. “We have been holding meetings every Thursday for the past three months. Every member of the League of Democrats has agreed to become members of the ADC. ADC will lead Nigeria, we are ready, and I appeal to all of you to join,” he said.
Addressing journalists after the gathering, Chief Odigie-Oyegun stated that the meeting was convened to update party leaders on current developments and to formally welcome new groups defecting from other parties. He revealed that two committees were established: one to mobilize for membership registration and another to support party coordination, both to work closely with the existing state executive of the ADC.
“This meeting is in line with the directives of the national electoral authority. We bring fresh energy. We are not here to disrupt those who have served but to complement ongoing efforts. We are focused on effective and verifiable membership registration, and in a few days, we will stage a fantastic convert,” Oyegun added.
Professor Osunbor described the meeting as a clarion call for Nigerians to support the growing coalition within the ADC, stating that the party is attracting individuals of integrity who are committed to bringing about meaningful change in Nigeria’s governance.
