Football Tragedy: Player Collapses and Dies During Adeleke Memorial Cup Final in Osogbo

A tragic incident unfolded in Osogbo, Osun State, during the Adeleke Memorial Cup finals as 29-year-old footballer Adeyemi Adewale collapsed and died on the pitch. The match, held at the Ataoja School of Science, took a devastating turn on what was also the late footballer’s birthday.

Eyewitnesses reported that Adewale, who played for Ilesa West Football Team, suddenly slumped during the game. Despite immediate efforts to save him, he was rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death. His body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue.

A relative of the deceased, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed deep sorrow, revealing that Adewale had been celebrated earlier that day before the unexpected tragedy struck.

Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident in an official statement, detailing that the footballer collapsed mid-game and could not be revived despite medical intervention.

The Adeleke Memorial Cup is an annual tournament sponsored by Honourable Bamidele Salaam, representing Ede North/South, Egbedore, and Ejigbo Federal Constituency, in honor of the late Isiaka Adeleke, the first civilian governor of Osun State and elder brother of the current governor, Ademola Adeleke.
