Five PDP Members Killed in Osun LG Crisis as Governor Adeleke Condemns APC Takeover Attempt

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has revealed that five members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were killed during a violent clash over the control of local government councils in the state. The crisis erupted as the All Progressives Congress (APC) attempted to reinstate its local government chairmen, who were removed by court order in 2022.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke confirmed the deaths and injuries suffered by PDP members. He stated that two members were killed in Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government, two in Ola Oluwa Local Government, and one in Ikire. Expressing deep concern over the violence, he urged for an end to the bloodshed and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

Governor Adeleke condemned what he described as an illegal takeover attempt by the APC, accusing the opposition party of orchestrating chaos through hired thugs. He advised Osun residents to stay away from local government secretariats to prevent further violence, directing that only security personnel should be stationed at the offices to maintain order.

In response to the escalating tensions, the governor emphasized that with local government workers on strike, no political actors should attempt to occupy the council secretariats. He reassured residents that security agencies have been deployed to ensure the protection of lives and property across the state.

The incident follows allegations by Governor Adeleke that his predecessor, the current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, was leveraging his relationship with President Bola Tinubu to incite unrest in Osun’s local government areas.
