In a devastating incident that unfolded on Friday, tragedy struck the heart of Anambra State as five individuals lost their lives in a gruesome road accident at the Odumodu Junction by Nteje, along the busy Onitsha-Awka Expressway.
The horrific collision involved two vehicles: a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus bearing the registration number XE245AWK and a commercial Daf/Leyland truck with the registration number T-19094LA.
The catastrophic event occurred around 7:30 am and was reportedly triggered when the massive container on the truck careened onto the hapless commercial bus. Eyewitnesses at the scene revealed that the mishap transpired as the bus driver attempted to navigate through a deteriorated portion of the road.
Tragically, the two vehicles were en route to different destinations, with one heading towards Awka and the other destined for Onitsha. Among the ten people caught up in the terrifying crash, three male adults and seven female adults found themselves in a harrowing ordeal.
The somber report indicates that five female adults met their untimely demise, while two male adults and two female adults suffered various degrees of injuries. Thankfully, one male adult emerged from the wreckage unscathed.
The Acting Sector Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps, Margaret Onabe, confirmed the heart-wrenching accident in an official statement. According to her, the likely cause of this fatal collision can be attributed to the deplorable state of the road.
Ms. Onabe disclosed, “Ten people, comprising three male adults and seven female adults, were involved in the crash. Five female adults lost their lives, while male adults and two female adults sustained varying degrees of injuries, and one male adult was rescued unhurt.”
The injured victims were promptly transported to Divine Care Hospital, Umunya, for critical medical attention, while the deceased were conveyed to Chira Hospital for formal confirmation by medical professionals before being laid to rest at the New Jerusalem Mortuary in Nteje.
At the time of this report, the sector commander, in collaboration with the unit commander in Nteje, is tirelessly working to clear the obstruction caused by this heart-wrenching accident.
In response to the tragic incident, Sector Commander Anambra State, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, expressed his deepest condolences to the grieving families and offered prayers for the repose of the departed souls. He also extended his well wishes for a swift recovery to the injured victims, urging all motorists to exercise caution and remain vigilant while driving, emphasizing the importance of “Driving to Arrive Alive.”
