Five Children Among 19 Dead in Kogi Crash Involving Abuja-Bound Bus
A devastating road accident on Sunday claimed the lives of 19 people and left eight others injured along the Lokoja-Obajana road in Kogi State. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident on Monday, describing it as a result of high speed and wrongful overtaking.
According to the Kogi Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kumar Tsukwam, the crash occurred around 4 p.m. in the Gadabiu community within Lokoja Local Government Area. The accident involved a Toyota Hummer Bus heading to Abuja and an articulated truck. Tsukwam revealed that the bus, while attempting to overtake another vehicle at high speed, collided head-on with an oncoming truck.
Of the 27 passengers involved in the crash, 19 were burnt to death, including five children. The remaining eight sustained various degrees of injuries ranging from bruises and dislocations to fractures and burns. The injured were promptly taken to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for treatment following a joint rescue effort by the FRSC and the police.
Tsukwam expressed deep regret over the tragic loss and reiterated the dangers of overspeeding and reckless driving. He urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent further incidents on the nation’s highways.
