FG to Begin Petroleum Exploration in Kogi State

The Federal Government has announced plans to commence petroleum exploration in Kogi State, a move aimed at tapping into the state’s potential oil reserves. Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, made this declaration during a visit by Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo and his delegation to the Ministry of Petroleum in Abuja.

Senator Lokpobiri emphasized that should the exploration reveal commercially viable crude oil reserves, it would significantly benefit the local population. “What we need to do is conduct the necessary exploration work, and once we discover oil in substantial quantities, Kogi can partner with operators or engage in trade for the benefit of its people,” he stated.

The Minister highlighted that this initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader policy to encourage exploration activities across the country, noting that Kogi State will not be an exception. He pointed out the high likelihood of discovering oil in commercial quantities, referencing the success of neighboring countries that previously lacked oil resources.

Lokpobiri assured Governor Ododo that funding is secured for the exploration efforts, in accordance with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). He stated, “There is money available for seismic exploratory activities that will help us increase our reserves, not only in crude oil but also in gas. The government is committed to this endeavor for Nigeria’s strategic national interest.”

The Minister also discussed plans to boost national oil production, aiming to increase output to 2.4 million barrels per day in the coming months. He expressed a strong desire to collaborate with Kogi State to enhance its contribution to the nation’s crude oil production, which would attract further investment into the region.

Lokpobiri concluded, “Working together with Kogi will help raise the necessary funds to finance government programs at all levels, enabling us to improve the economic landscape of the country.”
