FG Moves Ahead with New Satellite Programme, Targets 2028–2029 Launches
Nigeria’s next-generation satellite programme has entered the execution phase, with two new satellites—NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B—scheduled for launch in 2028 and 2029.
The Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT Limited, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, announced the development at the opening of the 2026 Satellite Week in Abuja. She said the initiative reflects the country’s push to expand the use of space technology for national development, security and economic growth.
According to her, the programme has moved beyond procurement and is now in the financing and implementation stage. She added that the new satellites will improve real-time communication, support intelligence operations and extend connectivity to underserved areas.
Egerton-Idehen said the infrastructure will also enable applications such as precision agriculture and rural broadband, while strengthening data support for government agencies.
“When operational, the satellites will enhance security within Nigeria and across the region, while providing critical data for decision-making,” she said.
The event, themed “Harnessing Space for an Extraordinary Nigeria,” convened policymakers, researchers and industry stakeholders to examine opportunities in space technology and digital infrastructure.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, described the programme as part of a broader shift from policy approvals to project delivery. He said the government is investing in fibre networks, telecommunications towers and satellite systems to strengthen digital capacity.
Tijani noted that Nigeria remains the only country in West Africa with an operational communications satellite, positioning it as a regional hub for digital services, particularly in underserved communities.
He added that beyond infrastructure, the government is working to build an ecosystem that supports innovation, research and practical applications across sectors, including agriculture and the digital economy.
