Samsung to phase out Messages app, directs users to switch
Samsung has confirmed it will discontinue its built-in messaging application, Samsung Messages, with users being directed to switch to Google Messages ahead of a planned shutdown later in 2026.
According to the company’s end-of-service notice, the app will be phased out by July 2026. After that date, sending text messages through Samsung’s native platform will no longer be supported.
The decision reflects a broader alignment of Samsung’s messaging services with the Android ecosystem, where Google’s messaging app is already pre-installed on recent Galaxy smartphones, including flagship models.
Samsung has advised users to begin the transition early to avoid disruption. It said **Google Messages** supports richer communication features such as RCS messaging, enhanced media sharing, and automated reply tools powered by AI.
The company also stated that users will receive in-app guidance to assist with switching to the new platform, which is available for download through the Google Play Store and can be set as the default messaging app.
However, Samsung later clarified on its website that the phase-out notice currently applies only to users in the United States.
