FG Denies N50 Billion Plea Bargain with Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele
The Nigerian Federal Government has officially distanced itself from reports of a planned N50 billion non-prosecution plea bargain with former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele. This alleged plea bargain was said to involve Emefiele surrendering the substantial sum to secure an early release from the Department of the State Services (DSS) custody, as well as to halt his ongoing trial on various charges including money laundering, breach of the Public Procurement Act, and abuse of office.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, categorically denied the existence of any such plea bargain agreement. Fagbemi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), clarified that neither his office nor the Presidency had engaged in any discussions or negotiations of this nature with Emefiele.
The official position of the Federal Government was conveyed in a statement by the Director of Information in the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Modupe Ogundoro. The statement firmly rebutted the allegations, terming them as “completely false.”
The statement also clarified that while Emefiele’s legal team had expressed their intention to initiate a plea bargain arrangement in court during the last hearing, no such agreement had been reached between the former CBN Governor and the government.
The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice advised both the media and the general public to disregard the unfounded reports, emphasizing that they would continue to act in the best interest of the Nigerian public.
This development adds to the ongoing legal and political intrigue surrounding Godwin Emefiele, whose trial has garnered significant attention in Nigeria. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen what further developments may arise in this high-profile case.
