FG Contemplates Full Autonomy for Universities to Boost Progress

In a bid to foster academic advancement and eliminate external hindrances, the Federal Government is contemplating the reintroduction of the University Full Autonomy Policy, as announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The government believes that granting autonomy to universities will empower them to progress independently.

President Tinubu, speaking through the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engineer Abubakar Momoh, expressed confidence in the proposed policy during the University of Benin’s 48th convocation ceremony. Tinubu emphasized that university autonomy would shift the responsibility of performance directly to individual institutions, reducing uncertainties.

Acknowledging the concerns of university staff regarding unpaid salaries, Tinubu admitted, “Government is not unmindful of the concerns arising from months of unpaid salaries.” In response, he announced a four-month salary payment for all university workers, emphasizing that it does not override the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy.

To address the financial challenges faced by universities, Tinubu assured a continued commitment to improving conditions through infrastructure development. This includes the provision of lecture theaters, student hostels, administrative offices, and learning tools, funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

“As a responsible government, we would continue to dedicate tangible resources to education and formulate sustainable policies that would outlive this administration,” Tinubu pledged. He emphasized the multifaceted role of universities in expanding horizons through research, technological breakthroughs, and the impartation of relevant skills.

Minister Abubakar Momoh echoed President Tinubu’s appreciation for the University of Benin’s leadership, recognizing Chancellor Orcivirigh Professor James Ortese Ayatse and Vice-Chancellor Professor Lilian Salami for their roles in steering the institution toward excellence.

Commending the institution’s milestones, Momoh extended the President’s congratulations to the graduates, wishing them success in their future endeavors. The government’s initiatives aim to empower universities and enhance the overall educational landscape in Nigeria.
