FG Conducts Price Enforcement Raids in Abuja Supermarkets, Plans Expansion to Lagos, Port Harcourt
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) carried out enforcement raids at two supermarkets in Abuja on Thursday, aiming to ensure compliance with price display and quantity regulations. The raids targeted reducing the high cost of food commodities nationwide and will be extended to other major cities such as Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, and Kaduna in the coming weeks.
During the operation, the FCCPC sealed the 4U Supermarket and removed 33 bags of suspected fake rice filled with weevils from one of the supermarket’s branches located in Wuse II. The FCCPC found inconsistencies in price displays and allegations of misleading practices at the supermarket.
The commission plans to conduct unannounced inspections at stores and open markets across different states in a bid to control the ongoing price surges that have not responded to the recent appreciation of the naira.
The rising cost of goods has been a major concern, as it impacts Nigeria’s headline inflation rate, which stands at 33.2% with a food inflation rate of 40% as of March 2024. The situation was further compounded by the fall of the naira against the dollar in earlier months, leading to increased prices of essential goods and services.
The FCCPC will continue its monitoring and enforcement actions to ensure businesses adhere to fair pricing practices. In an effort to protect consumers, the commission intends to introduce a price tracker next week in collaboration with the Bank of Industry to monitor prices of commodities nationwide.
Meanwhile, reactions to the FCCPC’s actions were mixed. While some supported the crackdown on supermarkets and markets, others criticized the commission for overstepping its bounds by regulating prices in the market.
The commission’s raids are part of a broader effort to address consumer protection concerns and bring down inflation in Nigeria, a move that has garnered attention from various industry and business groups.
