FG Summons MultiChoice Over Planned Price Increase
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria to explain its planned subscription price increase, set to take effect on March 1, 2025. The regulatory agency has raised concerns over the company’s frequent price adjustments and potential market abuses.
An investigative hearing has been scheduled for February 27, 2025, at the FCCPC headquarters, where MultiChoice will be required to justify its latest price review. The Commission cited Sections 32 and 33 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) as the legal basis for its intervention, stating that it has the authority to investigate and address anti-competitive practices.
The FCCPC expressed particular concern over MultiChoice’s pricing models, noting that the company appears to implement different strategies in other countries. The regulator warned that if MultiChoice fails to provide a satisfactory explanation or is found guilty of unfair market practices, it could face penalties, sanctions, or corrective measures to protect Nigerian consumers.
In a broader effort to ensure fairness in the digital broadcasting market, the FCCPC stated that it is working with the sector regulator and other relevant agencies.
