FG Allocation: Some Individuals Want Rivers to Experience a Black Christmas, But We Remain Committed to Our Obligations – Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has alleged that certain individuals, whom he described as “enemies” of the state, are attempting to create hardship for its residents during the festive season. Fubara made this assertion on Thursday in Port Harcourt during the launch of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Appeal Fund.

The governor’s statement comes in the wake of a contentious court ruling that has temporarily halted financial allocations to the state. In October, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend disbursement of funds to Rivers until a validly constituted house of assembly passes a lawful appropriation act. This ruling followed a lawsuit filed by the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly, which challenged the legitimacy of the state’s legislative body and its role in passing the 2024 Appropriation Bill. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik’s decision has drawn criticism from various quarters, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who warned that such actions could destabilize the state.

Governor Fubara, addressing the situation, emphasized that his administration remains committed to the welfare of Rivers residents. He asserted that despite challenges, his government has fulfilled its obligations and prioritized the interests of the people. He highlighted the recent salary increments for civil servants, noting that employees who previously earned N70,000 now receive between N120,000 and N140,000.

“Some persons who have decided to be enemies of this state wanted us to experience a black Christmas,” Fubara said. “But because we are determined to make the interest of Rivers State our priority, we were able to meet our obligations, even in the face of propaganda. Today, our civil servants are happy.”

Fubara underscored the importance of ensuring the well-being of Rivers citizens, stating that the government’s true legacy lies in improving the lives of its people. “The greatest joy any government can achieve is the happiness it leaves in the hearts of its citizens. People may forget the physical projects, but they will always remember the opportunities created for their families through improved livelihoods,” he said.

The governor also reflected on the significance of the Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Appeal Fund. As the son of a military officer, he recalled the pride and solace his family felt when his widowed mother participated in such events. Launching the emblem with a N40 million donation on behalf of the state government, Fubara praised the sacrifices of war veterans in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and unity. He expressed gratitude to those supporting his administration’s efforts to ensure stability and progress in Rivers State.
