Federal Government Proposes Performance-Based Salary Scheme for Workers
A groundbreaking initiative to introduce a performance-based salary system for civil servants is in the works, announced the Federal Government on Monday.
In a move aimed at rewarding productivity, officials revealed that employees at similar job levels could soon see variations in their salaries based on their individual performance.
Nasir Raji-Mustapha, the Director-General of the National Productivity Centre, unveiled the plans during a session with Labour correspondents, emphasizing the pivotal role productivity plays in driving economic growth.
“We are in the process of developing a productivity-led wage system that will ensure that those who are productive are rewarded for their efforts, irrespective of their grade level. Under the proposed system, employees on the same salary scale can earn different wages,” stated Raji-Mustapha.
Addressing concerns about stakeholder involvement, Raji-Mustapha affirmed that labor unions have been actively engaged throughout the initiative’s development.
“Labour, as a critical stakeholder, is being carried along in this exercise. As researchers, we don’t just do things without considering the recipient of the reports,” he affirmed.
The first phase of the study has been completed, with the subsequent steps involving consultations with various stakeholders before presenting the proposal to the Federal Government for consideration and potential adoption.
Furthermore, Raji-Mustapha highlighted international collaborations aimed at enhancing the productivity and skills of Nigerian workers. Partnerships with organizations such as the International Labour Organisation, Japanese International Cooperation Agency, Africa Productivity Association, and Asia Productivity Association underscore the commitment to driving positive economic impact.
In a bid to promote productivity among youths, particularly within the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the NPC has intensified efforts to advocate for productivity at NYSC camps.
The two-day National Productivity Summit, scheduled to take place in Abuja, will feature Vice President Kashim Shettima as the keynote speaker, further demonstrating the government’s dedication to fostering a culture of productivity and growth.
