Federal Government Lifts Restrictions on NYSC Posting

The federal government has officially lifted the restrictions on the posting of corps members under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), allowing postings to be more in line with their courses of study.

A memo dated November 18, 2024, from the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, directed the NYSC Director General to implement this change, effective from the commencement of the 2024 Batch ‘C Orientation Course.

Olawande explained that the decision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision to tackle the rising youth unemployment rate in the country. The president has called on the Ministry of Youth Development and its agencies to play a more significant role in addressing this pressing issue. The Minister further emphasized that the adjustment to the NYSC posting policy is part of efforts to better prepare corps members for the workforce, with more relevant placements according to their academic qualifications.

Previously, the NYSC restricted postings to four key sectors: Education, Agriculture, Health, and Infrastructure, a policy established under former Minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi. Olawande noted that while the previous policy was based on the government’s funding of the NYSC and concerns about the overuse of cheap corps labor by the private sector, it had unintended consequences. Many corps members were limited in gaining specialized experience in their areas of study, hindering their readiness for the job market.

The new directive is expected to open up more opportunities for corps members to serve in fields closely related to their academic backgrounds. As part of the new policy, corps members may now be posted to private sector organizations, including banks and oil and gas companies, starting with Abuja and Lagos.

The lifting of posting restrictions will take effect with the 2024 Batch ‘C Orientation Course and applies to all matters related to the posting and distribution of corps members to their Places of Primary Assignment.
