Federal Agencies’ Relocation Sparks Controversy: Northern Senators, Regional Groups Clash
Controversy erupted as Northern senators vehemently opposed the relocation of federal agencies from Abuja to Lagos, expressing concerns over what they perceive as a biased allocation in the 2024 budget favoring the South. The senators argue that such a move would further underdevelop the North.
In response, regional groups like Afenifere and the Middle Belt Forum criticized the Northern senators, emphasizing the need to focus on results rather than regional interests. Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Jare Ajayi, pointed out that some departments were originally in Lagos and supported the relocation if it enhances agency performance.
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) also echoed the Northern senators’ position, emphasizing a pattern of actions against the interests of Northern Nigeria. ACF’s statement raised concerns about the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) relocating to Lagos.
The Northern Senators Forum (NSF) plans to engage with the executive arm, National Assembly, and stakeholders to address budgetary concerns and agency relocations. Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila assured constituents that they are committed to resolving these issues through open dialogue and collaboration.
Afenifere’s Mr Jare Ajayi criticized the Northern senators, stating that performance should be the priority and noting that some agency departments were originally in Lagos. The Middle Belt Forum’s Dr. Bitrus Pogu called the protest myopic and unpatriotic, emphasizing the importance of focusing on national interests rather than regional concerns.
However, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) refrained from making a categorical statement, stating they lack complete information on the matter.
South-South leader Chief Edwin Clark defended the relocation, highlighting previous relocations like the Navy to Kano and the transfer of Shippers House and Nigeria Maritime Authority to Abuja before later moving to Lagos. Clark urged Northerners to avoid provocation, emphasizing that Abuja belongs to all regions.
