In a groundbreaking move, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has initiated the first-ever demolition of an unauthorized construction within the Abuja region. On Monday, a formidable bulldozer, under the supervision of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), brought down a lavish duplex situated on Plot 226 in the unapproved lands of Wuse Zone 6.
According to Mr. Mukhtar Gidado, the Director of the Department of Development Control, the structure had been erected in blatant disregard of repeated warnings and regulations. In a meticulous effort, Gidado’s team undertook an exhaustive investigation to ascertain the legitimate owner of the disputed plot, as various claims were being presented by involved parties.
The results of the investigation uncovered a startling truth – the developer was not the rightful owner of the plot. This revelation was pivotal in the decision to carry out the demolition. Gidado emphasized that the FCT Administration would remain unwavering in its stance against defaulting developers who violate established building codes.
Gidado stated, “The duplex was razed because it was constructed on land that the builder lacked valid title and building plan approval for. Despite these infractions, we followed due processes and allowed the building to progress to its current stage before taking action.”
The director further revealed that the purported owner of the building had received numerous cease-and-desist notices, which were blatantly ignored. He commented, “Our investigation conclusively established the rightful allottee of the plot. Thus, the removal of the building was deemed necessary.”
As the aftermath unfolds, the FCT Administration plans to engage its legal department to determine the appropriate actions to be taken against the disobedient developer. This move by Minister Nyesom Wike’s administration stands as a resolute message that flouting construction guidelines will not be tolerated, reinforcing the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by the authorities.
