FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Orders Closure and Renovation of International Conference Centre

In a move aimed at revamping the deteriorating state of the International Conference Centre in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced the suspension of all events at the facility. This decision came after Mr. Wike personally inspected the centre on Monday.

Mr. Wike attributed the suspension to the need for urgent rehabilitation work to be carried out by Julius Berger, a renowned construction company. He emphasized the necessity of addressing the poor condition of the centre, stating, “There is nothing international about the centre.”

During his inspection, Mr. Wike expressed disappointment at the state of the facility, highlighting issues such as inadequate lighting and general disrepair. He underscored the urgency of transforming the centre into a world-class venue, declaring, “We cannot accept this as an international conference centre.”

As part of the renovation plan, Julius Berger has been tasked with completing the total overhaul of the centre within an eight-month timeframe. The goal is to ensure that the facility meets international standards and becomes a source of pride for Nigerians.

Addressing the management of the centre, Mr. Wike announced the appointment of Maureen Tamuno, an experienced public officer and diplomat, as the new head of Abuja Investment Company (AIC), which oversees the centre. He expressed confidence in her ability to steer the project towards success.

While acknowledging the need for accountability, Mr. Wike emphasized the importance of focusing on the task at hand and delivering results. He reassured the public that efforts would be made to establish a robust management framework for the revitalized International Conference Centre.

The decision to suspend events at the centre underscores the commitment of the FCT Administration to prioritize infrastructure development and enhance the capital city’s status as a global hub for conferences and events.
