FCCPC to Review DStv and GOtv Subscription Price Hike
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has announced plans to review the upcoming price hikes for DStv and GOtv subscription packages. The move aims to ensure that Nigerian consumers are treated fairly and receive adequate value for their money.
This development follows MultiChoice’s announcement that it will adjust the prices of its DStv and GOtv packages across Sub-Saharan Africa, with new rates taking effect from May 1, 2024. MultiChoice has cited increasing operational costs as the reason behind the price hikes.
“The recent price increases by MultiChoice will be thoroughly examined by relevant stakeholders,” said Adamu Abdullahi, the acting CEO of the FCCPC, in an exclusive interview with Channels Television’s “Dateline Abuja.” He emphasized the importance of reviewing such price changes to protect consumer interests.
Under the new pricing structure, the DStv Premium package is set to rise from N29,500 to N37,000, while the Compact Plus package will go from N19,800 to N25,000. These adjustments have sparked concern among consumers and regulators, prompting the FCCPC to step in for a detailed review.
In the same interview, Abdullahi also discussed an ongoing investigation into a Chinese supermarket in Abuja, which has been accused of discriminatory practices and other sharp practices. “We have issued a summons to the owner of the store as part of our investigation,” he stated.
The FCCPC’s dual focus on these key consumer issues underscores its commitment to ensuring fair treatment and value for Nigerian consumers in various sectors. The commission’s actions in reviewing subscription price hikes and investigating alleged unfair business practices are expected to provide much-needed oversight and protection for consumers.
