FBI: ‘Missing’ Yoruba Monarch Breaks Silence, Gives Reason for His Absence

Oba Joseph Olugbenga Oloyede, the traditional ruler of Ipetumodu in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, has broken his silence regarding concerns over his prolonged absence from Nigeria. The monarch, who has been in the United States for nearly a year, addressed allegations surrounding his whereabouts, denying claims of being in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or being involved in any fraudulent activity.

In a video call with SK Blog, Oba Oloyede, appearing in good spirits, dismissed the rumors as baseless, attributing them to individuals displeased with his ascension to the throne. He expressed frustration over the spread of misinformation, stating, “We know the people behind these lies, and we will sue for defamation.” The monarch insisted that his time in the US was due to medical check-ups and business engagements, adding, “You don’t wait till you are sick before you do a medical check-up.”

Reports had surfaced alleging that a Nigerian with the same name as the monarch was implicated in a multi-million-dollar fraud case in the US. However, Oba Oloyede refuted these claims, clarifying that his business, which has been operational for 25 years, remains compliant with legal requirements. “If all they are saying were true, my license would have been revoked,” he asserted.

The monarch also addressed concerns that his absence could delay the installation of the new Alaafin of Oyo, as tradition assigns him the duty of delivering the sword of authority. He clarified that while Ipetumodu has historical ties to Oyo, no modern Alaafin has personally visited to perform any rites. “When Alaafin Adeyemi III was installed, the stool of Apetumodu was vacant, and representatives were sent to perform rites. As of now, no one from Oyo has contacted us regarding this matter.”

Responding to reports that he had been evicted from his residence, Oba Oloyede stated that he was instead in the process of rebuilding his palace. Sources disclosed that the monarch personally funds many community projects and palace expenses, including a monthly electricity bill of approximately 900,000 naira. “Kabiyesi uses his own funds to support the community and does not ask for money from anyone,” a source revealed.

The monarch urged his subjects to remain calm and dismiss false reports, emphasizing that Ipetumodu remains peaceful and law-abiding. “We must ignore the naysayers and continue to uphold the unity and traditions of our town,” he concluded.
