Family of Three Dies in Lagos Expressway Crash Triggered by Speeding Truck
A father, mother and their young child died early Wednesday after a multi-vehicle collision at Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed that the crash occurred when a heavily loaded truck, reported to be speeding, struck one of the cars from behind, pushing it into two other moving vehicles.
According to LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the vehicles involved were an Audi, a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Corolla. The truck driver fled immediately after the impact, leaving the victims at the scene.
LASTMA personnel arrived shortly after the collision and worked with other emergency teams to rescue trapped occupants and clear the expressway. Two survivors with critical injuries were transported by the Lagos State Ambulance Service to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at Toll Gate for urgent medical attention. The bodies of the dead were handed over to the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for evacuation.
Security officers from the Isheri Olowora Police Division supported the operation, while the Federal Road Safety Corps, LASEMA, SEHMU, LASAMBUS and the Lagos Fire & Rescue Service participated in managing the scene and removing the damaged vehicles.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the event as a severe blow to the affected family and urged motorists to approach the expressway with greater discipline. He emphasised that excessive speed, particularly among drivers of heavy trucks, continues to play a major role in fatal crashes. He added that the agency will intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts while maintaining close coordination with emergency and security bodies to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents.
