Falconets Secure Last-Minute Victory Against South Korea in U20 Women’s World Cup

In a thrilling encounter at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s Falconets claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over South Korea, thanks to a stoppage-time goal by Flourish Sabastine. The match, held at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogotá, was marked by few clear-cut chances, but the Nigerian side capitalized when it mattered most.

Throughout the match, both teams struggled to convert opportunities. Nigeria’s Mary Lucky Mkpa nearly put her team ahead but was unable to find the precision needed to finish. The Koreans, however, had the first real opportunity to score in the 15th minute, only to be thwarted by a crucial intervention from Nigerian defender Shukurat Oladipo.

The Falconets had a scare in the 28th minute when goalkeeper Shukurat Bakare mishandled a cross, but the resulting shot from a South Korean forward sailed over the bar. Later in the half, Mkpa had another chance to break the deadlock after receiving a brilliant pass from Rofiat Imuran, but her effort went too high.

Just before the halftime whistle, South Korea’s Myeyung struck the crossbar with a powerful free-kick from 22 yards out, nearly putting the Asian side ahead.

In the second half, the Falconets pushed for a goal, with efforts from Sabastine, Amina Bello, and substitute Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, all being blocked by the Korean defense. As the match seemed destined for a draw, Sabastine found the back of the net with a shot from the right wing that ricocheted off the post and in, securing the win for Nigeria.

With this victory, the Falconets will now prepare for their next Group D clash on Wednesday evening against three-time champions Germany, who defeated Venezuela in their opening match.
