Falconets Secure Last-16 Spot After Dominant Win Over Venezuela at U20 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s U20 women’s team, the Falconets, have advanced to the Round of 16 at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup following an emphatic 4-0 victory against Venezuela in their final Group D match on Saturday night at the Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in Colombia.

The Falconets, led by coach Christopher Danjuma, took control of the match early, with first-half goals from Amina Bello, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, and Flourish Sebastine. A late strike from Joy Igbokwe in stoppage time sealed the comprehensive win.

Nigeria’s performance in the group stage saw them finish with six points from three matches, the same as Germany, but they placed second due to an inferior goal difference and head-to-head record.

Okwuchukwu was pivotal in the win, providing the assist for Bello’s opener in the 16th minute before doubling Nigeria’s lead with a header in the 28th minute. Sebastine added the third goal in first-half stoppage time, while substitute Igbokwe scored a stunning long-range effort with the last kick of the game to cap off the victory.

Despite the strong showing, the Falconets finished behind Germany in Group D and will now face the top team from Group E, either Japan or Austria, in the knockout stage. The crucial Round of 16 clash is scheduled for September 13.

Nigeria will be hoping to maintain their momentum as they aim for a deep run in the tournament.
